Richard Yoong
Hi everyone! I’m so excited about the XSEL program and looking forward to meeting you all!! I am Yoong Wai Chun, Richard, a year-2 student major in Translation (Chinese and English) in Lingnan University, Hong Kong.
Last summer, I joined a program related to Social Entrepreneurship and it is where I got to know the concept of social entrepreneurship/social enterprise. In the program, I attended some talks on Social Enterprise, visit social enterprises in Hong Kong and Yunnan, China, and had an opportunity to do practicum in Biciline, a social enterprise in Hong Kong which aims at providing job opportunities and training for lowly educated teenagers in the local community and promotes eco-tour in Hong Kong. I learnt that every social enterprise is reflecting at least one social problem and social entrepreneurs are striving to master the dynamic between social mission and financial sustainability, especially through innovative ways. The Big Issue and the Dialogue in the Dark are the two classic examples. The program offered me a very brief introduction on Social Enterprise and I hope I can learn more thoroughly in the XSEL program.
One of my hobbies not related to social entrepreneurship is playing violin. I have played violin for many years, but please don’t expect that I’m a very good performer! Haha! I’m currently teaching a group of adults and a child playing violin. If you would like to know more about violin, come and talk to me! I think I can give you basic knowledge of the instrument:) Aside from playing violin, I still have many different hobbies and I’m willing to share with you in XSEL!!(or even Facebook if you are so urgent! XD)
I am most excited to chat with you all, the participants of XSEL, so as to exchange our thoughts, personal aspirations, concerned issues in the world and ideas of what we can do to make the world a better place. I hope we can build up valuable friendship!
If I have unlimited money, I would invest in education in the world. It is because I think education is vital to develop people’s talents and fully exploit their potential. However, the quality of education provided by different schools varies significantly. I thus hope that my investment can narrow the difference or even create a fair system that allows students to learn and grow regardless of their social background and they do not have to worry about their future as long as they work hard.
This is a short biography of Richard:) See you all in the US!!
